Discussion Post: Writing
This is not a research-based paper but should reflect what has been covered in the previous section and your understanding of the material. You can include outside material in order to support your response but be sure to properly cite this material (in-text and in a reference page). Make sure to answer all parts of the question in your response! Once finished, be sure to submit your response on Canvas.
Choose one of the following questions and answer it in full:
I. You have probably taken an IQ test at some point (SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.). Do you believe that this score is a fair representation of your knowledge? Why or why not? The results of these tests are often used for admissions to colleges and universities. Is this a valid measurement to judge applicants on? Why or why not? If not, what recommendations do you have?
II. Imagine that you are a policymaker. You have been tasked with developing criminal justice polices using biological criminology theories. What policies would you implement to help reduce crime? Do they differ from the ones that have been put into use throughout our history? Is there a way to use biological criminology responsibly and ethically?
III. Apply biosocial theory to your own life. Are there elements of your personality or behavior that have been influenced by genetics? What about your environments? Explain your answer.
IV. The majority of the public dislikes the insanity defense because they believe this defense lets offenders "get off easy" and that it puts communities at risk. What are your thoughts? Does the insanity defense achieve justice and serve a useful function today? Why pr why not? If you could create your own rule for determining insanity in criminal trials, what would it be?
