Case Study: Clare criticizes the typical rhetoric and narratives surrounding disability in "Brilliant Imperfection," saying that Christopher Reeve's claim that "the worst thing about being disabled is a feeling of hopelessness"is ignored. Reeve ignores many of the conditions that disabled people face including ableist isolation, violence, lack of education, poverty, unemployment, and lack of employment, as Clare explains. According to Clare, disability challenges, such as inadequate access and accommodations, can be addressed by social justice.
In Clare's view, the act of highlighting disability as a matter of social justice is an essential part of the resistance act. There are problems of injustice in the world, not in individual bodies and minds, as a result of this declaration. The root of disability is not paralysis or blindness, but the lack of access and accommodation in society. The focus shifts from trying to "cure" disabled individuals to removing barriers and promoting access to necessary accommodations by locating the problem in the world. Instead of trying to fix disabled people, this approach might lead to a more ethical form of care that addresses their needs.
Clare argues that instead of focusing on "cure"and trying to fix individual bodies, we should declare disability a social issue. To achieve this, we must realize that the real problem lies in the world around us, not in the bodies of disabled people, and address the social and systemic barriers preventing their full participation in society. We can work towards a more just and equitable society by reframing disability as a matter of social justice.
The way we approach disabled people's care has implications for the way we approach disability as a matter of social justice. Rather than focusing solely on "cure" and fixing individuals, we should focus on providing support and accommodations that enable disabled people to lead full and meaningful lives. Making public spaces and buildings more accessible, providing education and employment opportunities, and addressing ableist attitudes and behaviors might be some of the ways to achieve this. Disabilities can be approached more ethically and compassionately if we focus on care rather than cure.
