Question - Abnormal Psychology - Consider who might be inadvertently and unjustifiably included or excluded by the various criteria for defining abnormality. For example, when considering the unusualness criterion, use examples of behaviors that might be misguidedly included according to this criterion and those behaviors that we might agree should be labeled as abnormal, but are excluded by this criterion. You could also look at ADHD or homosexuality as examples of the effects of culture and historical time on what makes something abnormal. Prior to the publication of DSM-III in 1980, homosexuality was considered a mental illness. In DSM-III it was considered a disorder only if the homosexual person was emotionally troubled by it - that is, only if it was ego-dystonic. In DSM-IIIR (1987) it moved into a general category of sexual disorders "not otherwise specified," where it was recast as "persistent and marked distress about one's sexual orientation," for ego-dystonic heterosexuality as well as homosexuality. Then homosexuality is dropped completely from the DSM as it is no longer viewed as "abnormal". These changes in the DSM were not driven by scientific research, data, or even theoretical views but by evolving societal norms and political pressure. Culture dictated first that it was abnormal then that it was not.
Similarly, ADHD is found at a prevalence of over 5% in the U.S. but under .05% in the majority of the world; is this "abnormality" culturally created?
What about strange religious practices like speaking in tongues?
Are some hard and fast rules that should certify behaviors as abnormal, or are societal values absolutely necessary?
