Question 1: What about other types of human rights violations with countries that we do not have as close ties with? The US and the EU have a lot of economic power that they can leverage to punish human rights violations by governments in other countries. The U.S. suspended a trade deal with Myanmar shortly after the military coup in 2021. But the EU debated what to do, noting concerns that Burmese textile women workers would largely pay the price for cutting trade between the EU and Myanmar. There is the possibility of US sanctions on the state-run oil company that Chevron has ties with, which is a major source of income for the military government in power. Most of the sanctions are targeted sanctions on military-owned companies and on military leaders instead of trade sanctions that would affect the population of Myanmar. The EU has sanctioned the state-owned oil and gas company and Chevron announced they are leaving Myanmar.
