Question: To evolve is to change. Change for some can be uncomfortable and even scary. Paradigms of education are constantly evolving. Education is going through an adjustment period. Paradigms are important because they define how we perceive reality and how we behave within it. Baker et al (2021) explains that educators us paradigms of education somewhat colloquially to mean a system of thought about educational principles and practices. Currently, a paradigm shift is taking hold in American education. In the old paradigm of teaching, the teacher's knowledge is transferred to passive learners. The classic classroom is the teacher lecturing and students listening. The students are silent, passive, and in competition with each other. From my understanding, the current paradigm of teaching is based on the theory and research that have clear applications to instruction. In the current paradigm of teaching, knowledge is actively constructed, discovered, transformed, and extended by students. The teacher's effort is aimed at developing students' competencies and talents. Education is no longer defined in terms of what a teacher will teach but rather in terms of what a student will be able to demonstrate. Student and teacher now share the responsibility for the quality of the student's learning process unlike in the past. Everybody has their own ideas of what types of change we need in education. Educational paradigms do not stop in the classroom and in the school. Educational paradigms follow students' home where they practice what they learn. These educational paradigms become the lens in which students view their environment.
