Assignment:
The Enlightenment is sometimes called the "Age of Reason". Clearly the Enlightenment can be seen as a time when Western Civilization "came of age". Europe put aside its immaturity and finally grew up. Reason would govern the way people behaved and thought. How would you explain what the 18th century European Enlightenment means to a friend? How can we measure the spread of Enlightenment ideas? What does the response of these intellectuals--edicts of religious toleration, abolition of torture, calls to end slavery, legal reforms, increased freedom of trade, respect for the rule of law, debunking superstitions, the foundation of schools and scientific academies--tell us? Without this beginning, women's equality, civil rights, electoral reform, and ideas of human liberty would not be possible. Briefly explain your view of how humankind is measuring up to these ideas today in the 21st century.
