Think about the current struggles around reproductive rights with the following questions: In 1970s women of color were sterilized without their consent leaving them without the ability to procreate. During the same period, abortions were illegal across 33 states and 13 states permitted abortion under certain circumstances. One the one hand, the right to birth was taken away from Mexican women by white men, while at the same time, white men barred white women from deciding if they wanted to keep a zygote, embryo, or fetus. Consider their contradictory practices and try to explain what may have driven the dominant reproductive practices of medical professionals and reproductive legislature of politicians of the period?
