After watching the video using the link: Stinging Dust & Forgotten Lives: The Dust Bowl (2008)
The Dust Bowl was an equal opportunity disaster; no matter who you were or how much money you had, if your home was on the Great Plains, you were getting pummeled by dust and dirt. You couldn't hide from it or ignore it, and you certainly couldn't control it. What, then, could you do? It seems there were really only two doors to go through: (1) pull yourself up by the bootstraps and fight for survival, (2) desperately seek governmental help.
As such, which door - #1 or #2 - will you pick? While you ponder your path forward, here's the situation:
It's election season! On the ballot is President Franklin Roosevelt and his many New Deal programs.
- What's your vote?
- Do you think, as president, FDR did a sufficient job combating the Dust Bowl?
- Did he do enough to help you and your family, or do you think he actually did too much?
- Were the effects of the New Deal programs positive and life-changing, in your mind, or were they instead wasteful and cruel?
- Boiling it all down, do you think he's taking the country in the right direction, or are you concerned with the way things have played out on the Plains?
Obviously, your vote will be influenced by whichever door you chose - #1 or #2. The fact of the matter was, farmers on the Plains were torn; they desperately wanted to protect their independence and way of life, but they faced enormous odds that made survival without help next to impossible.
- That said, you need to justify and rationalize your perspective.
- Explain precisely why you think and feel the way you about the Dust Bowl and the president. Use specific examples and details if you had a chance to hear real-life stories and see the Dust Bowl for what it was.
