An infant boy presents with hypotonia from birth. He is slow to regain his birth weight and displays delayed motor milestones. He does not roll over at 4 months or sit at 6 months. On examination at 7 months of age, he is found to have truncal ataxia and decreased deep tendon reflexes but displays good eye contact. He is afebrile, responsive, and awake with a history of adequate wet and stool diapers. He has no rash. What should be the initial step in his evaluation?
