Software Development for the Web
Website prototype
Learning outcome 1: Evaluate and justify the choice of language and platform for a website.
Learning outcome 2: Identify and develop personal technical skills by building a website using modern web technologies.
Learning outcome 3: Evaluate, justify and reflect upon the implementation of online systems to meet organisational requirements.
Assessment task
Summary
You are a web development consultant tasked by your local or regional government to produce a website to deliver information on COVID-19 to their citizens as a response to the global pandemic.
The government have briefed that you will:
• Analyse the requirements to specify the required features of the website.
• Design an appropriate information architecture, including all relevant content in a structured and coherent manner.
• Produce wireframes for the website design on both mobile and desktop
formats.
• Develop a prototype of the website (this is the activity for assessment 2).
Website prototype
As the final task of the brief, you will build a website prototype based on your submission for Assessment 1 (Website design and specification).
You must include some of the following technologies in your prototype:
• HTML5 for semantics
• CSS3 for styling
• PHP for server-side code
• MySQL for databases
• Javascript for client-side code
The specific features you implement should be chosen carefully to represent all of the above technologies and demonstrate your ability to deliver the website proposed in the first assessment. You do not have to include all pages or features in your prototype, though it should demonstrate a majority of the design and features of the proposed website.
If you are unsure if your prototype contains sufficient features, you are advised to contact your module tutor for guidance in advance of the submission deadline.
You will be expected to submit all of the code you produce for the prototype as a single zip file.
Critical reflection and evaluation
In addition to the prototype above, you are expected to write a separate document containing a 500-word (±10%) reflection on your experiences developing the prototype. At a minimum, this should include:
• Justification for any changes from the website design and specification
• Justification of your features chosen for the prototype
• Reflection on the development process
• Areas for improvement the next time you embark on a web project.
The document should be included in your zip file submission in either Word (.doc/.docx) or PDF format.
Overall project
The final 10% is awarded for the creativity, completeness and quality of your website prototype and its suitability to meet the brief.
You are advised to carefully read the indicative marking criteria at the end of the assessment brief to ensure you have included all of the necessary features.
