Bernard, the CEO of a software company - Macro, is concerned that his firm's Human Resource Management (HRM) capability is weak relative to that of a key competitor - Orange. He offers Alexandra, who currently heads HRM at Orange, twice her current salary, and she joins Macro. Bernard believes he has fed two birds with one scone, and remarks "Alexandra will substantially strengthen Macro's HRM capability, while her exit will considerably weaken Orange's HRM capability".
