The concept of person refers to someone that receives nursing. Watson's theory of person goes beyond the physical human being but values and prioritizes the unity of mind and spirit. One of Watson's translated caratives in the clinical setting is, "being present to, and supportive of, the expression of positive and negative feelings as a connection with deeper spirit of self and the one-being-cared-for" (Watson attained by Cara, Chanta). Thus, being present in the moment is to give your undivided attention and fully engage during an interaction. Also, to form true connections with the person by encouraging positive feelings and creating a non-judgmental space during feelings of negativity. During my nursing practice as a pediatric nurse, I have used this idea multiple times to not only address their medical needs but support their emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs. Children usually have a tough time expressing their needs when they are sick and in pain. I encourage children to tell me exactly what they are feeling, and I often use age-appropriate toys to allow for effective expression. I will admit that it can be hard to fully understand children in times of distress but collaborating with others such as child life.
