Water (at 4oC) is to be delivered to the top of a ski area for snowmaking purposes. The water is to be drawn from a reservoir at the bottom and delivered to a 1 cm diameter nozzle at the top where it exits horizontally at a velocity of 10 m/s. The elevation of the nozzle is 300 m and the reservoir is at an elevation of 50 m. The 15 cm diameter pipe that delivers the water to the top has losses according to KV2/2g with a K value of 1200.

a. What are the losses in the system?

b. What pump size (in HP) is required to deliver this flow rate?
