We are watching the 1921 silent film "The Sheik" starring Rudolph Valentino.

In the film, we see the origin of different stereotypes about Muslim Arab communities in the Middle East.

While you watch, consider how this film might have been received by American audiences who knew very little about Arabs & the Middle East and very little about Islam and how Muslims worshipped. How might this film, and Hollywood more generally, have instilled specific stereotypes in the American viewers' minds about Muslim Arabs? How do these stereotypes persist until today?
