Assignment:
First, watch the Ted Talk video - "The hidden influence of social networks" by sociologist and physician, Nicholas Christakis.
Please work to demonstrate critical thinking skills
1) Explain how at least two concepts from chapter 4, 5 or 6 explain what Nicholas Christakis is speaking to in the video?
- Please provide a definition for the two concepts you choose from the ebook - as you explain how they integrate with the video.
2) Do you think your social media networks (the people you interact with online) are formed by individual choice or from the algorithms created by the app that you follow?
- Explain how algorithms - also known as filter bubbles - work. If you are not sure what a filter bubble is - look at the information on wikipedia here.
3) Do you think that challenges like "obesity" are the result of biology (defined as "nature" or genetics in our sociology ebook) or by "nurture" which is the result of social and environmental influences where you grow up at. Provide a definition for socialization, nature, and nurture, from the ebook.
- Explain your reasoning for your answer to why obesity is so prevalent in our society.
4) Do you think that the person that you are today - is directly related to the place where you grew up at, the parent(s) that raised you, the amount of money that your family had available to keep care of your needs, and/or the people that you hung out with? Please explain.
Or do you think that you - as a person - are uniquely different - that your preferences and behaviors are based on your own independent choices, tastes, values and attitudes of the world? Would you say that you are you the product of "Nature" or "Nurture" or something niquely different?
