Assignment:
Overview: The representation of Native Americans in Western films has been problematic from the early days of silent cinema. The "Hollywood Indian" is a recognizable character type based on popular imagination and cultural stereotypes. In many Westerns the "good Indian" (male or female) is often played by a White actor in make-up, a practice that became known as "redface." This practice persisted well past the end of the Classical Hollywood era in films such as Little Big Man (1970) starring Dustin Hoffmann as a Native American and A Man Called Horse (1970) with British actor Richard Harris wearing redface while playing a White man captured by an indigenous tribe.
