Assignment

Read Chapter, "The Drive for Power," in The Ascent of Man, and watch the eighth program in the BBC television series. Read as well the sections in Philip Appleman's Norton Critical Edition of Darwin that deal with geology in the 19th century. Answer the question

Bronowski compares the Industrial Revolution with the American and French Revolutions. He calls the Industrial Revolution the "English Revolution," but it was clearly influential well beyond England. Why does Bronowski call it the "English Revolution," and on what grounds? How did its " English" character come to affect other countries where the Industrial Revolution also occurred? Do you think there is an ideology to industrialization that affects a country when it becomes industrialized? It is sometimes said that the IR was the result of "tinkerers," not "thinkers." Would you agree? Please quote at least one passage from Bronowski's accunt of the Industrial Revolution that reflects the way science and technology were in fact significantly connected as partners in the Industrial Revolution.

When you have completed the above assigned readings related to geology in the 19th century, visit as well two websites devoted to different aspects of Lyell (and the geology of the Galapagos Islands): Charles Lyell (1797-1875), and Geology of the Galapagos Islands Your analytical writing assignment this week is to describe briefly what Lyell's geological ideas were, and especially the role that he ascribed to uniformitarian forces at work in geological change.

On what evidence did Lyell argue that geological phenomena were the result of forces acting slowly over vast periods of time? Analyze briefly the major catastrophist alternatives to uniformitarianism (Vulcanism and Neptunism), and evaluate the evidence on which these theories were based. Why were Lyell's ideas especially important for Darwin as he set sail on the Beagle to examine the flora and fauna of Latin America? How were Lyell's ideas especially significant for the development of Darwin's evolutionary theory? How did they apply in the case of the discoveries Darwin made on the Galapagos Islands? Please quote at least one passage from Lyell's Principles of Geology that best captures his general philosophy of geology, and anoher from any of Darwin's publications in the Appleman anthology that also reflects his appreciation for Lyell's work in geology. Do you think Darwin would have been able to develop the theory of evolution without his knoweldge of Lyell?
