Directions: Answer the following questions completely. Some questions may need additional research so that they can be completed. Please answer all questions on a separate piece of paper.

  1. What is the name of the facility you visited? (If it was a virtual tour, provide the URL for the tour.)
  2. Where is the Waste Water Treatment Facility (WWTF) located?
  3. What is the geographic area it services?
  4. How many people does it serve?  What is the status of the area population since the construction of the facility (i.e.: increased or decreased, and to what percent)?
  5. When was the facility built?
  6. What is its design capacity?
  7. How much water per day does it treat?
  8. How many industries and what type of industries are connected to the system?
  9. Does the facility receive stormwater runoff for treatment?
  10. Is the facility a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) system? If yes, what challenges have faced the facility by being a CSO system?
  11. How does the WWTF remove solids, reduce organic matter, and disinfect the effluent?
  12. What types of parameters or conditions are monitored by the facility operators while the wastewater is being processed?
  13. Where does the facility's sludge (biosolids) go? Who monitors the management of the sludge to ensure that it meets health and environmental standards? What are some of the standards? What happens if the sludge fails to meet the standards?
  14. How can sludge become a useful by-product of the WWTF system?
  15. Where is the treated water discharged (i.e.: name of the receiving surface waterbody)?
  16. Who specifically monitors the discharge of treated effluent to ensure that it meets the standards? What are some of the standards? What happens when they are not met?
  17. If the water is safe to be discharged into the environment, why is it not used as the drinking water source for the community?
  18. What seasonal changes (if any) are necessary in the operation of the facility?
  19. hat is the biggest water quality concern facing the facility? What plans, if any, do the operators have for addressing the concern?
  20. As water users and waste generators, we all contribute to the wastewater stream. (Even if you have an on-site private septic system in the service area, some waste eventually comes to the facility, and you must even have to pay an "availability fee" if you are near but not connected to a municipal system.) What specific types of pollution prevention actions can be undertaken to reduce the volume, pollutant loads, and toxicity of wastewater sent to the facility?
