Was the Norman Conquest actually the 'real' first Crusade? It is a fact that William flew the Papal banner at Hastings. Is there a mixture of politics and religion that is difficult for us to understand from our modern perspective? What motives do historians ascribe to Pope Urbane the II's call for a Crusade? Was it purely about religion? Was it very Christian? Were the Crusaders themselves motivated by religion or greed? A mix of both? Did the different 'estates' have different motivations to go on Crusade? What were they? Why would a Noble, Peasant, Clergyman, or King go on Crusade? Give me the main motivators for each Estate. After seeing the lives of peasant's depicted in the film what does the reading tell you about being a Noble in comparison? Just for fun...Are you glad you are not a Peasant?
