Was it realistic to imagine that the Berlin Wall would fall or that the USSR would crumble or that apartheid would end in South Africa or that a black man would reside in the White House? Was it realistic to imagine that thirteen colonies would defeat the British Empire or that Boston would win the World Series after having lost the first three games of the American League Championship Series and having trailed in the ninth inning of game four? Was it realistic to imagine that a Vermont housewife (Jody Williams) would elicit an international ban on land mines? Was it ever realistic to imagine that an obese person would lose weight, or that a smoker would quit, or that an alcoholic would get sober? It isn't realistic to imagine that University of Hartford students will collaborate to form a self-government of, by, and for all the students. It isn't realistic to imagine that they will elicit a campus-wide ban or meaningful restriction on smoking, or campus-wide commitments to certified fair trade products, and certified humane animal products. It isn't realistic to imagine University of Hartford students inspiring legislation to redistribute the tax burden according to wealth. Can you imagine how one supremely simple piece of legislation, i.e., the maximum wage, would instantly redistribute wealth? Can you imagine how another supremely simple piece of legislation, i.e., perjury penalties for political dishonesty, would instantly bring truth to politics? Do you think the majority of citizens would want such bills? What would it take to get the balls rolling? It isn't realistic to imagine that University of Hartford students would get these balls rolling . . . . . . . . so get them rolling.
