Visual Branding
Identify a communication problem.
A fundamental visual communication problem arises when someone creates a new company or rebrands an existing company with a new direction.
The problem with visually branding a new company is that nobody knows about the company or understands what they do and why they do it. Through graphic design we can help solve these problem through visual forms that communicate the qualities of our brand.
Be sure to do some deep thinking about what you want to accomplish through the visual design solution.
The assignment is divided into 2 main sections:
• Finalized logo with rationale
• Brand style guidelines which include:
• Typography
• Colours
• Usage
1. I want you to choose a company/product/service to use for this assignment which you think would benefit from a complete visual rebrand.
The other option would be to create your own company (real or imagined) that requires a visual branding. This is an opportunity to pursue that dream career! Imagine you just started your own company - and then build a visual brand for it!
2. Finalized LOGO -
Create a finalized version of your logo. Keeping in mind the 5 principles of logo design (Simple, Memorable, Timeless, Versatile, Appropriate), create a finalized logo design.
The final logo can be created by hand through drawing or by digital design tools.
You will need to include the following examples:
• A grayscale or black and white version of the logo
• A REVERSE grayscale or black and white version of the logo that can be displayed on dark backgrounds
• A full colour final version of the logo
Along with your logo you will need to include a description of the Design Process that led to the finalized version of the logo as well as a rationale for your decisions.
Along with your logo please thoroughly answer the following questions:
1. What does your brand stand for?
2. How does your logo represent your brand? What does it communicate and how do your design decisions help communicate your message?
3. How did your sketches lead to this concept?
Full marks will be awarded for delivery of a logo design that clearly reflects the answers to the questions provided. There is no 'correct' answer but your thought process and the rationale behind your decisions should be evident in how your logo communicates.
3. Brand Style Guidelines -
The brand style guidelines will show examples of highlight and explain your decisions brand through your choice in typography and colour.
4. Typography -
Choose two typefaces that you will be using in your visual branding.
One typeface should be the font that you are setting your business name in and the other should be a typeface that will be used to support the logo in other elements of design (ie. text copy, business cards, letterhead, website text, signage, etc.)
Show an example of your business/logo name in 10 different typefaces showing at least 1 example in each of the major type categories (serif, sans-serif, script, display).
Using a layout similar to what you saw in some of the style guide examples, show the finalized type selection for your logo and describe why you chose this font and how it helps communicate your brand message.
Include an example of the secondary typeface you chose and include a description of how this choice supports your logo typeface and why you chose it.
5. Colour -
Create a primary colour palette that you will be using for your brand.
