Guidelines:
The critical analysis of an argument must be 6-7 typed, double-spaced pages based on https://www.michaelmann.net/content/our-response-latest-climate-change-denying-wall-street-journal-op-ed
You should view writing your critical analysis as writing an argument. Ultimately, you want to support a claim for your judgment. You are not writing to register your attitude toward the issue or argument. Rather, you are to analyze the argument according to certain argumentation criteria. Accordingly, you must provide a charitable summary of the argument before you begin your analysis. In order to make your claims about the argument, you need to provide reasons (criteria) and evidence (details from the argument) to support your judgment. Standards for documentation for your paper shall be based on the guidelines provided by the MLA Style Manual. Your analysis should be written for a naïve, but an intelligent reader. In other words, write for any of your professors other than me. Don’t assume that your reader will understand anything that is not explained in your essay. Criteria for each paragraph: 1st paragraph: choose one of these criteria that fits best with the article. Either logical, or rhetorical, or dialectical. (I will attach lecture notes for you to use when referring to the criteria that you chose for this article.) 2nd paragraph: determine which patterns of reasonings(criteria) does the article fall into, could be more than one pattern, depending on the claim made in the article. (I will attach the lecture notes that include all patterns of reasonings for you to determine which to choose from that is related to the article.) 3rd paragraph: determine which of the criteria does the article fall into when looking at the eight criteria for evaluating evidence. (I will attach these eight criteria for your reference from my lecture notes.) Outline: Paragraph I: 1 Identification of topic and arguer 2 Identification and resolution of unknowns 3 Charitable summary of the argument 4 Statement of overall judgment and preview of reasons 5 Identification and definition of criteria Paragraph II: 1 Judgment according to the first criterion 2 Evidence supporting that judgment 3 example 4 example 5 example
Paragraph III: 1 Judgment according to the second criterion 2 Evidence supporting that judgment 3 example 4 example 5 example
Paragraph IV: 1 Judgment according to the third criterion 2 Evidence supporting that judgment 3 example 4 example 5 example
Paragraph V: 1 Summary of your judgment on each criterion 2 Restatement of overall judgment.
