1. Underlying the theory and practice of HRM is the view that employees are of value. Explain, with reference to your learning this semester, why is this a key tenet of HRM. You may use the readings and examples from lectures to support your response.
2. Drawing on HRM theory and concepts, outline the HRM arguments for workplace diversity and suggest three HRM strategies (eg work design, attraction and selection, retention and development, performance management, reward management, wellbeing and safety) that an organisation could implement to create and sustain a diverse workforce.
3. A 'Total Rewards' strategy offers employees an range of intrinsic and extrinsic rewards designed to motivate employees to be productive and committed workers. Explain the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and outline the role of rewards as part of a broader HR strategy in helping an organisation achieve its business objectives.
4. Increasingly, contemporary organisations are questioning the traditional performance management model of yearly or 6 monthly performance appraisals in favour of more immediate and ongoing feedback methods. Explain the role of an organisation's performance management system (PMS) in managing the performance of individuals and the organisation and explain why traditional methods of performance feedback are being called into question.
5. Attraction, recruitment and selection can make a strategic contribution to a firm's competitive advantage. Critically discuss.
6. The desire of employers to make better use of their employees' knowledge and skills and to retain those who are valuable to the organisation is recognised as a strategic priority. Drawing on your knowledge of training and career development and one other HRM activity explain how organisations can attract and retain its valuable Gen Y employees.
