Mr. Walsh was visiting his primary care provider for treatment of an upper respiratory infection. While he was being assessed in the treatment room by the physician's assistant (PA) the following exchange occurred: Exchange with Use of Jargon PA: How are you feeling Mr. Walsh? How's your SOB? Mr. Walsh: (confused and defensive) Who are you calling an SOB? PA: Oh, I'm sorry. Your breathing. How's your breathing? Mr. Walsh: Okay. Exchange Without the Use of Jargon PA: How are you feeling Mr. Walsh? How's your breathing been? Mr. Walsh: It's not good when I get these coughing spells. PA: Okay, I'm going to listen to your chest now and then we can talk about that.

1. Discuss a routine patient care scenario frequently involved, one that requires avoiding discipline-specific terminology or jargon in the sharing of information with a patient, family member, or colleague from a different discipline.

2. Plan the clearest and simplest way to communicate that information. Consider both your verbal and nonverbal communication in the plan.
