As the nurse-manager of a busy medical/surgical floor, Veda supervised student nurses during their clinical rotation, recent graduates, all the way up to nurses have 15 years of experience. Despite the wide range of skill and experience, Veda truly enjoyed her role as teacher, mentor, colleague and friend. Even though Veda had a doctorate degree in nursing, to keep her skills fresh, periodically she would schedule herself for direct patient care. As she walked into the nurses' station after leaving a patient's room, she saw Jill, a recent graduate trying to organize her notes to prepare for shift change report. Veda said, "One of the things I miss the most about floor nursing is connecting with the patients. I was never a big fan of the paperwork." "Who has time for connecting with patients? I barely have their room numbers and orders straight, and it's already time for shift change. I spend most of my time trying to remember what I'm supposed to do with each patient." Veda replied, "Oh Jill, after you've had some experience you'll realize that it's not what you do with what you know about nursing, it's how you do with what you know about nursing.
