Define and compare the various roles and characteristics of a leader and a manager in theory.

Make reference to any CEO, or head of an organisation, and give examples where they would have displayed the role of a manager and leader, comparing the difference in the functions. Feel free to use more than one senior head in the same firm if you cannot find examples of both roles in one person. For example, at Coca cola the CEO James Quincey is likely to exercise many management roles, such as defining the strategy of the firm and defining a long term vision for the firm. Students must then discuss the influence of management and leadership theories on management and leadership functions. Here students must attempt to link the influence of these theories on management and leadership styles of today. For example, we might argue that classical management theory has influenced the autocratic / dictatorial/ transactional leadership manager or leader of today. On the other hand, the human relations theorists have also played a role in more modern approaches to management with more motivational leadership models such as transformational leaders and so on being formed.
