The HIM manager, in an effort to enhance productivity and spirits, explained to staff that he was going to pilot a variety of changes in the physical characteristics of the department over the summer. He would be trying something different each month and ask for their feedback in September. In June, he was able to give them 2 hours off with pay one day a week; in July, he was able to bring the office temperature down 5 degrees; and in August he brought in pizza for lunch each Monday. In September, he asked for feedback regarding what was the favorite perk and, even though he may not be able to continue with any of them, explained that at each month's department meeting they would spend time discussing new ideas, including new equipment or process changes and he would evaluate and support or deny it as appropriate. Even though the summer perks were over, performance continued to rise and remain high into the fall. What theory would explain this?
