Value chain management involves managing all functional areas in such a way as to improve quality, efficiency, responsiveness to customers, and innovation. Attention to quality and efficiency in all functions of the value chain enable organizations to build competitive advantage in order to achieve their business-level strategic goals. Marketing, customer service, and product development are intimately concerned with being responsive to customer needs. Effective materials management and production are strongly linked to quality improvement in the process of transforming raw materials into finished products. Effective managers have in-depth understanding of their company’s value chain and work hard to continually improve it. Doing so decreases costs, improves efficiency, increases quality, and improves productivity and profits.
