In the Skinner (1953) readings this week, we were introduced to the idea of control via punishment from the governing bodies in our society that control societal behavior. They assert their control through the threat of punishment when breaking laws and expectations. Skinner (1953) stated, "In discussing controlling agencies we are concerned specifically with certain kinds of power over variables which affect human behavior and with the controlling practices which can be employed because of this power" (p. 335). The laws and rules that are set by the governing body are often founded in the same ideals of "right" and "wrong" that are implemented by religious bodies. Utilizing the impact of "shame" and "guilt" can help to sway the individual via power of punishment to act or behavior within the confines of the law.
