Chris is a thirty-five-year-old male who came to the emergency department following a motor vehicle accident. He has several injuries, and it has been determined he is experiencing internal bleeding. The emergency room provider has requested a surgery consult. Although Chris consents to surgery, if needed, he declines consenting to a blood transfusion even if his life depends upon one. His reason for refusing a blood transfusion is that Chris is a devout Jehovah's Witness and receiving a blood transfusion goes against his religious beliefs.
