The debate between utilizing paper or plastic in the retail market has and will always be around. The majority of grocery stores offer you the choice of paper or plastic, and some stores are even moving towards a more environmental friendly reusable bag. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to both paper and plastic for packaging in the retail market.
Some advantages of using paper for retail packaging are that paper packages are less harmful to the environment then utilizing plastic because paper is completely recyclable. Paper, if not completely destroyed, can be reused in the retail market multiple times. (Hamblin, 2013) Some disadvantages are that paper is a lot easier to destroy and will eventually become unusable. Another disadvantage for paper is that it is not as durable so it provides less protection then plastic.
Some advantage of using plastic is that plastic is more durable then paper, providing the manufacture with a higher guarantee that the product will not be destroyed while being shipped. Another advantage is that plastic can be reused if not destroyed. Some disadvantages are that plastic is far more harmful to the environment then plastic. (McGrath, 2015) One last disadvantage is that some chemicals that are used in producing plastic can harmful for human consumption. This can potentially hurt the consumers.
Regardless of whether or not the manufacturing companies are using paper or plastic for their products, people are trying to develop ways to protect the environment from harmful pollutants.
