Question

Utilitarianism resonates with democracy's ideal that everyone counts equally. But while that works easily for voting, it is not obvious that everyone should be of equal concern to every person, as people care more about their friends and relatives. But can we say that loyalty diminishes with distance from us? Doesn't that make ego-centrism primary? And if remoteness diminishes caring, doesn't that invite exploiting remote others for our interests (which is historically normal)? How comfortable are you with favoring those close to you to the neglect of remote others?
