A 78 year old long term care resident , Mrs. Smith, was served hot tea and pizza in bed per her request and usual habit since moving in to the community in 2019. She asked the C.N.A. caring for her to please turn out the lights and close her door as she typically does. The CNA honored that request. Shortly after the C.N.A. left her room, Mrs. Smith knocked over her tea and spilled it in her lap. She called for help and the CNA came right in and help clean her up. THe CNA reported the incident to the nurse. The nurse noted redness to her skin on her thigh from the hot tea. The nurse completed and incident report and notified the physician and family. At your morning meeting you are made aware of the incident report. You look into the situation and see that a few weeks prior the Mrs. Smith had a hot liquids assessment completed and she was determined not to be at risk for hot liquids as part of her quarterly care plan review.
