Osmotic pressure is the pressure exerted on amembrane by a solution when there is a concentration difference on either side of themembrane. For instance, if you place a water-permeable balloon filled with a 0.1M solution of NaCl into a beaker filled with 0.01 M solution of NaCl, the balloonwill expand due to the osmotic pressure difference until the concentrations areequal. Using what we have discussed in class, answer the following questions:

1. How can you calculate the pressure in the balloon and the pressureoutside of the balloon?

2. What is the osmotic pressure in the balloon at 22 °C?

3. What is the osmotic pressure outside the balloon at 22 °C?

4. What is the pressure difference?

Using the Morse equation, which we haven't discussed, I get aninside pressure of 4.8 atm, an outside pressure of 0.48 atm, and a pressure difference of 4.3 atm. What do you think accounts for any differences or similaritiesbetween my answers and yours?
