Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) is rapidly becoming the “best practices” method of approaching how to treat patients. EBM aggregates the best current medical evidence on how to treat patients. EBM programs can be integrated into the EHR to assist in decision making.

Some EBM results are surprising. For example, EBM evidence shows that uncomplicated strep throat should NOT be treated with antibiotics because it doesn't shorten the course of illness at all.

A great debate rages right now whether EBM should be used as the standard of care for all patients, versus letting the clinician treat based on experience. Some argue clinicians cannot keep up with all the literature and need EBM, others argue it is just “cookbook” medicine.

In your first post answer the following questions:

How do you explain the difference between using EBM and not using it?

What are the pros and cons of using evidence based medicine in decision making in EHRs?

Are you for or against the use of EBM?
