To remove a potential toxin from the body requires the use of an energy consumptive process. At the cellular level this process relies on the following steps:

a) absorption from the blood stream of toxin;

b) inter-cellular acquisition of toxin by an active transport mechanism;

c) dephosphorylation of the toxin by enzyme controlled system

d) inter cellular removal of harmless end products by exocytosis.
