It is very important to use attending skills when talking to clients, regardless of what they are dealing with. Attending skills refer to being with your client, not just your presence, but focused on them entirely. It is very easy when people are talking to allow your mind to wander, but when talking to clients it is extremely important that you give them your undivided attention. I liked the SOLER acronym for attending, (S)quarely face your client, (O)pen posture, (L)ean toward the client, (E)ye contact, try to be (R)elaxed with the client. One of the main reasons that attending is so important is building rapport with the client. When in a crisis you want to be able to get to the root of the client's problem and be able to help them as quickly as possible. Using attending can help get them to trust you, and feel as though you care, and they can tell you anything. One consideration I can think of is being aware of crossing professional boundaries, in the sense of a dual relationship, which from last week's reading we know are prohibited.
