Some anaerobic bacteria use an alternative pathway for glucose catabolism, as shown in the attached figure, that converts glucose to acetate rather than pyruvate. The first part of the pathway (glucose to fructose bis-phosphate) is identical to glycolysis. In the second part of the alternative pathway, Enzymes 1-6 all have mechanisms/activities analogous to enzymes in glycolysis. Note that there are two C-C bond cleavage reactions in the new pathway (A to B+C and C to B+D). All the steps where ATP is consumed or made are shown. However, the addition or loss of NAD+/NADH, Pi, H2O, or H+ have not been shown explicitly. Draw the structures for the intermediates B, F, G, H, and I. Include the other reaction participants as needed.

Describe one familial genetic disease that is carried by a dominant gene and one that is carried by a recessive gene.
Kangaroo rats living in the western American deserts have very efficient kidneys; they excrete an exceedingly small volume of highly-concentrated urine in order not to lose much water from their bodies.
Suppose the two tryptophan codons within the leader peptide of the trp operon were changed from tryptophan to asparagine. Predict if attenuation (premature termination of transcription) of the trp operon will occur if bacteria are grown on media c..
A.Decreased competition between two species leads to increased niche specialization.
What are the 6 kingdoms used to classify all living organisms and list all six kingdoms and what organisms are in each.
What is the function of sigma factor?
Cyanide binds to complex IV of the electron transport system, preventing the reduction of oxygen to water. Explain the ultimate effects of cyanide on electron transport, oxygen consumption, and ATP production. How can these in turn affect a person.
Mutation can affect the genome in many different ways. For now, consider mutations that (1) result in changes of the third codon position, and (2) result in changes of the first codon position.
What are DNA binding proteins? DNA binding motifs?
Viruses use the host cell machinery to replicate. However, some viruses replicate their genomes by a mechanism that host cell cannot support.
compute the isoelectric point of a protein. It would also be helpful if you could declare any constants (i.e. pH=5) in advance of both problems.
Select the pBR322 plasmid (a circular piece of DNA used as a cloning vector) to analyze (menu in upper left hand corner of the simulator). You will then see a diagram of the circular plasmid DNA along with the points along the length of the plasmid w..
