Use a give pattern of development - Compare and contrast or

Cause and effect

Analyze your ideas in order to develop sophisticated points and evidence.

Write in the third person and with careful academic language. (Academic, but not pedantic).

Paragraph Assignment Three will be based on prompts to one of two readings. The prompts will also indicate specific rhetorical modes (patterns of development) to be used in the responses. Choose one of the two suggestions.

Do not retell the story in the reading, but instead assess a concept from it, connect it with your own prior knowledge (which informs your "point of view") and then create a unique and compelling idea. Remember to avoid phrases such as "in my opinion" or "I think"; instead, simply state your ideas and evidence.

Students should also try to consider other refinements when writing Paragraph Assignment Three. Try to be sure your idea is well-supported, presented in a logical order, and that each sentence is clearly and accurately written.

You may support your information with credible researched material where necessary. Use MLA style.

For example, Tony Wong discusses stereotypes. You may wish to analyze how the Internet has affected stereotyping, either if it has become more accessible, or if the Internet can be used as a tool against it. Part of your research could be to refer to those specific situations through research. Remember to cite all information you use.

Following:

1.      International students must often deal with feelings of anxiety, which at times may threaten their success as they try to earn degrees in a new country and using a new language.  James Lincoln Collier identifies how he earned success by altering one negative concept to a more positive one in his article, "Anxiety: Challenge by Another Name."  After reading this article, which emotional state could you define in a way that could become a helpful, rather than harmful, attitude?

Like Collier, you may support your point by developing three "rules" as advice that you think will help international students succeed, rather than succumb to fears and concerns. Use cause and effect to show how your advice can help an anxious student when he or she first comes to Acadia.

Note: If you also choose to use "anxiety", you must develop your own definition and suggestions. Do not just repeat those in the reading.
