On Friday August 4, 2017, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) published the following data for July 2017:

a. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000 in July. Job gains occurred in food fervices and drinking places, professional and business services, and health care. Employment growth has averaged 184,000 per month thus far this year, in line with the average monthly in 2016.

b. The number of unemployed persons, at 7.0 million, changed little in July. The unemployment rate, at 4.3 percent, was little changed over the month.

c. Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rate decreased for Whites to 3.8 percent in July, while the unemployment rates for adult men (4.0 percent), adult women (4.0 percent), teenagers (13.0 percent), Blacks (7.4 percent), Asians (3.8 percent), and Hispanics (5.1 percent) showed little or no change.

d. The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks or more) was essentially unchanged at 1.8 million in July and accounted for 25.9 percent of the unemployed. Over the year, the number of long-ter.
