Agree or disagree and why?
The Do Not Call Registry, or DNC for short, was signed into law in 2003 by George W. Bush. He famously stated "Unwanted telemarketing calls are intrusive, annoying and all to common. When Americans are sitting down to dinner or parents are reading to their children, the last thing they want is a call from a stranger with a sales pitch." During the first five months, 50 million Americans had already signed up. By 2006, that number had swelled to 122 million. That was more people than had voted for the President of the United States!!
Telemarketers were worried. They anticipated losing about $50 billion each year due to the DNC registry. Prior to the DNC registry, telemarketers placed approximately 24 billion calls annually, with around 180 million of those ending in sales. That number is shocking to me and means that not nearly as many people were annoyed my telemarketers as I had anticipated.
The DNC law still allows calls from charities, political organizations, and telephone surveyors. Also, if you have bought anything from a company, that in itself constitutes as an "established business relationship" and telemarketers may contact you for up to 18 months. Even if you just make an inquiry with a company, they can legally call you for up to 18 months after the last inquiry. Lets say you buy a 2 year subscription to a magazine. That company can call you as much as they want for the entire time you have the subscription. Wow!! Although the DNC seems to be working somewhat, I still believe there are way to many exceptions in the law.
Many companies ignored the law. DirecTV was fined $5,340,000 in 2005. Dynasty Mortgage was fined $770,000 in 2005 and AT&T was fined $30,00 in 2004.
