Amir is a 30-year-old citizen of Pandora, who walked across the border from upstate New York into Canada on August 17, 2022, after unsuccessfully attempting to claim refugee protection in the United States. Amir was a successful businessman who had never been interested in or involved in any sort of political activity. In the midst of negotiations relating to a major real estate purchase, Amir learned that the proposed buyer was a member of a drug cartel. Concerned that the real estate transaction would become a conduit for "money laundering", Amir exercised his option to pull out of the deal. Soon after, Amir began to receive threatening phone calls at his office. His wife was attacked by unknown men in the street. In the past year responsibility for over one hundred cases of torture and some 40 assassinations have been attributed to members of the drug cartel in Amir's country of origin.
