In order to combat the upsurgance of nihilism caused by the death of God in the modern scientific world-view, Descartes employs methodological doubt so as to arrive at an absolutely unshakable first principle of philosophy that will serve to ground all knowledge and philosophy and give certainty to a world of seemingly random chaos.
