We all work in increasingly complex, interconnected work environments where diversity and globalization form the fabric of modern society. Not surprisingly, our workplaces tend to mirror the sociocultural dynamics at play in our lives outside work. Diversity today also includes employees with diverse religious and political beliefs, education, socioeconomic backgrounds, sexual orientation, cultures, and even disabilities. Diversity in the workplace is an asset for both businesses and their employees, in its capacity to foster innovation, creativity, and empathy in ways that homogeneous environments seldom do. Companies are discovering that, by supporting and promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace, they are reaping major social and bottom-line benefits.
Yet it takes careful nurturing and conscious orchestration to unleash the true potential of this invaluable asset. In fact, at times, diversity may create the opposite of the expected outcomes when people from different backgrounds come to work together. Often, you may only rely on your own imagination to explain what is happening and determine what the solutions to the situation may be.
Following are five (5) cultural situations. The task is to imagine a cultural explanation for each situation and offer your best solution(s) to address it. Use the knowledge acquired from this class and other resources and align your thoughts whenever possible to the general course Learning Outcomes.
1. A Caucasian patient at a retirement facility claims that she does "not want to be taken care of by a black nurse."
2. A couple of teammates report to their supervisor that a "very unpleasant body odor" from their new co-worker who is from India is preventing them from working together.
3. An LGBTQ employee shares with her supervisor that she is increasingly isolated in the team and at lunch because she thinks, she revealed her sexual identity a couple of weeks earlier to a colleague.
4. A small group of 6 Caucasian males together took a full day off work on a day the company had planned a Black History Month event that included an ethnic lunch. They shared racist messages on their Facebook pages including one stating, "I m not gonna b part of that BLM company, and ain't eating that black s***".
5. Choose a situation from your experience (or create one) and offer a solution.
