QUESTION 1

An electrochemical cell is constructed by placing a Ag|AgCl reference electrode and a silver wire in contact with a solution containing an unknown concentration of silver ions, Ag+.

(a) What kind of electrode is the Ag|AgCl reference electrode - first, second or third - and why?

(b) The above electrochemical cell has a measured potential of +0.470 V. Calculate pAg+ and the silver ion activity aAg+ of the solution.

(c) The standard electrode potential for the Fe3+/Fe2+ half cell is +0.771V. In reality a Pt electrode immersed in a solution that is both 1M in Fe3+ and Fe2+ will have a slightly lower potential than this. Explain briefly why this is so.
