An estimated 21% of all new HIV infections in the United States occur in teens and young adults. Yet most sexually active 13- to 24-year-olds often don't realize that they're at risk for HIV, so they don't get tested. In fact, this age group is more likely than any other to have undiagnosed HIV. San Francisco, California has one of the largest HIV populations in the US, with 15,537 people living with the virus. The number of people living with HIV has declined since 2018, with deaths surpassing new diagnoses. As of December 2022, 73% of people living with HIV in San Francisco were over 50, with 8,579 being classified as stage 3 (AIDS). AIDS is a late-stage HIV disease with low CD4 cell count or opportunistic infection. Among all people in 2022 at least 15% Black/African Americans were diagnosed with HIV in San Francisco.
