ADA Accessibility Description of Photo: The Photo is a World War I era recruiting poster. An image of "Uncle Sam" is dressed with a white top hat with a blue band of stars on it alongside a blue dress coat with a red bow tie. Uncle Sam has white hair with flowing locks curled up and around the hat. He has a determined facial expression as his piercing eyes stare straight ahead. He points his finger straight ahead as if he is accusing the viewer of the conviction of the patriot duty that all red-blooded Americans must fulfill. The bold wording immediately below the image reads, "I Want You for U.S. Army. Smaller block lettering further below reads : "Nearest Recruiting Stations." Directions: Read chapter 21 and review setting and answer the questions below. Remember to post your response and to add a comment to at least one other student post. Setting: The years of 1914-1920 seemed to challenge the very essence of American Democracy at home and abroad. While Germany, England, France, Russia and other European-Middle eastern powers were engaged in an epic war, America was entangled in social, race, and ethnic conflicts. Eventually the U.S involved itself in this oversea war, a war that will cost America the lives of 130,174 military personnel. As a member of the Allied powers, America won the war and returning U.S. soldiers came home cloaked in victory. However even as the guns fell silent, America's role in the Great War has been debated and the discourse is still very much relevant as the we attempt to understand the "Lost Generation's" war.
