Introduction to the theme

Talent management (TM) is the process by which businesses and organisations recognise and develop talented people who can have a positive impact on their organisations and their productivity. It not only has become a key component of human resource management but also the responsibility of leaders and managers at all levels to manage talent within the business, with TM strategies being developed in line with the particular needs and structure of the business and industry. Themes of TM relevant to businesses when considering a strategic approach to talent management include the following:
• The role of line managers and leaders in employee development and well-being;
• Talent management being used as a lever for culture change;
• The importance of contextualising approaches to talent management;
• The need for new and innovative ways of working to achieve a strategic approach to talent management; • Barriers for the development of a strategic approach caused by economic and day-to-day operational pressures.

Staff retention, training and morale is key in any industry where talented motivated employees can help differentiate one organisation from another and influence business success. An increasing number of businesses are rethinking ways to get the most from their staff. Rising costs, recruitment difficulties and changing employee attitudes mean that, for many employers, the traditional approaches to recruiting, training and retaining staff are being revisited to harness and develop talent and ultimately drive competitive advantage.

Scenario:
You are employed as an assistant within the professional development team of an organization. You have been asked to conduct a small-scale project in form of an investigative project. To look for what issues and challenges may arise out of the said topic (in below) in your mentioned organization and what measures could be taken to resolve them. A business case for management on how to improve employee retention through recommended initiatives. The business of the said organization can be for all types of business nature, e.g. retailing and wholesaling etc. Beside the investigation of a good practice within the business, a collating employees' feedback is involved. Therefore, either interviews or questionnaire will be launched and designed respectively.

This report is proposed to be presented to your managerial board as a business case with simple power-points. Moreover, a reflection upon the project in relation to your own personal and professional development is also facilitated with the project. Here below issues are for your further consideration:

Either one topic is chosen from below:

1. What talent strategies do the best companies use to attract and retain people?
2. What are the key challenges and obstacles facing different business sectors in terms of talent management? (select one business sector e.g. marketing, finance, operations, manufacturing).
3. How are companies responding to managing talent across different age profiles?
4. How do different cultures influence the talent management approaches taken by company?

A simple presentation power-points with 8-10 slides (under Harvard referencing which is related to your report content) with relative business model(s) is required to submit together with your final report.

(A) Project planning:
- Devise a project management plan to map out how you intend to meet the project objectives;
- Clearly stated the scope, purpose and objective(s) of your business project and roughly define your project management during the process; (LO1)
- Precisely define the initiation phase and steps during the process, including providing details of activities to be carried out initiation, planning and execution of the project; (LO1)
- Create a work break down structure using a Gantt charts to track the activities to be undertaken; (LO1)

(B) Conduct primary & secondary research:
- In collecting data for your business analysis, clearly show what kind of methods will you use, e.g. by qualitative and quantitative research methods etc., and develop your arguments what are the benefits in using primary data & secondary data collection in doing your research in such two methods; (LO2)
- Both methods are required. For quantitative method study, define your research area for your data collection, such as selecting a sample of the respondents. You can decide what kinds of sampling approaches and techniques (e.g. questionnaires or interview samplings etc.) to be used in your research analysis; If you are going to choose qualitative method by means of case study, define at least two other organizations to see what type of wellbeing initiatives they have. Research the value and benefits of addressing wellbeing in terms of improving employee retention. Focus on areas of good practice to build and support your business cases. (LO2)
- Be ensured your research is under ethical process and be reliable & valid. Limitation and ethic consideration are required to show in your report during the data collection. (LO2)

(C) Present Findings:
- Collate our research and analyse your findings; (LO3)
- Produce and present the business case including an evaluation of tools used to gather research and data to justify your recommendations for implementing wellbeing initiatives;

(D) Reflection:
- A specific reflection is facilitated after your business report in focusing the following two aspects:
1. A performance review with your line manager to critically reflect upon the project plan, process and outcomes and what kinds of problems will be faced and how well on it from your series of research study in different aspects and information gathering; (LO4)
2. A reflection statement also includes your personal future development from your research project which leads you to develop your business skills and development in running a business project. (LO4)

(Remark: A log book for the project launching is required to submit. It is recommended to have a draft submission to the project supervisor for preliminary review during the process.)
