Unit 6 Construction Information (Drawing, Detailing, Specification) - Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment

Assignment - Construction Information

1. Construction Information; to include:
a. Site plan
b. Floor plan
c. Elevations
d. Section
e. Detail(s)
f. Door and window schedules
g. Outline bill of quantities
h. Schedule of works
All drawings are to be on a minimum sheet size of A3. They should include a title block, showing project information, and be numbered using an industry standard.

Drawings should be produced using an industry standard CAD software package. BIM software may be used, but is not required.

Rationale Statement - a brief justification (minimum of 1,000 words) of your decision for producing specific information, comparing the choices you have made with other potential information types.

Learning Outcome 1: Evaluate different types of construction information in the context of diverse project types.
Learning Outcome 2: Develop construction drawings, details, schedules and specifications in support of a given construction project.
Learning Outcome 3: Interpret different types of construction information in order to explain a construction project.
Learning Outcome 4: Assess ways in which construction professionals collaborate in the production of construction information.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

Your employer, a medium-sized general contractor, has been commissioned to design and build a small building in a local industrial park The design team within the company has prepared a set of outline design drawings, which provide general information about the proposed building, site and form.

You are tasked with the responsibility of preparing the construction information package that will allow the construction team to build the project. The package of information required includes the following:
• Site plan
• Floor plan
• Elevations
• Section/Details
• Door and window schedules
• Outline bill of quantities
• Schedule of works
Accompanying the construction information package, your employer wishes to understand your reasons for the drawings, specification and schedules that you have produced.

Scenario

You have been appointed to prepare an initial conceptual design and implementation report on a College building.
The Client who is a private investor needs a five storey framed building(s). The building frame provides the structure for a series of high specification class rooms and meeting rooms and laboratories which are intended to be built in the south of England, around Heathrow Airport. The building can be developed with steel or concrete or a combination of both.

LO1 Evaluate different types of construction information in the context of diverse project types.

TASK 1

(a) Explain the use of construction information in the context of a project in general or based on the current scenario.
(b) Describe the different types of construction information and their uses. What type of construction information you will use for the current scenario and justify their use?
(c) Compare different types of construction information to identify their suitability in specific contexts (current scenario)

LO2 Develop construction drawings, details, schedules and specifications in support of a given construction project.

Task 2
(a) Prepare a set of general arrangement drawings, selected details and door/window schedules. (Current scenario)
(b) Produce an outline bill of quantities. (Current scenario) (c)Compose a schedule of works. (Current scenario)
(d) Justify the use of specific types of construction information in Task 1 & Task 2 support of a given project. (for current scenario)

LO3 Interpret different types of construction information in order to explain a construction project

Task 3
(a) Produce specification notes for construction.
(b) Evaluate construction drawings and details to identify errors and clashes.
(c) Critique a body of construction information, identifying errors and discrepancies.
(d) Propose corrections to construction drawings and specifications using industry standard forms of notation.

LO4 Assess ways in which construction professionals collaborate in the production of construction information.

Task 4

(a) Assess the types of information produced by different participants in a construction project, in general or using current scenario as an example.

(b) Examine the relationship between different bodies of information and how they work in conjunction. (c)Compare the roles of CAD and BIM in the collaborative production of construction information.
