Unit 44 Industrial Power, Electronics and Storage - Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Engineering)
Assignment - Energy demand, technologies and methods of production, efficiency improving measures, technologies and policies.
Learning Outcome 1: Evaluate the energy demand to determine the technology and methods of energy production
Learning Outcome 2: Explore current energy efficiency measures, technologies and policies specific to the building and transportation sectors
Assignment brief
Purpose of this assignment is to test your understanding on
• Evaluating Energy demand and methods of energy production considering existing and renewable energy systems by determining technology.
• Also to explore energy efficiency measures, technologies and suitable policies specific to building and transportation sectors.
Scenario
EWA and SEU are the Governing bodies to look after energy matters in Kingdom of Bahrain. Being appointed as probationary renewable engineer in SEU, senior engineer assigned you the task described below before actual implementation on site.
The task is to seek the possibility of installing PV panel and electrify 3 houses/an electric vehicle instead of existing utility grid which consume approx. 3.kW load.
You have to ensure that the overall system becomes more reliable and economical to run for optimum energy management, hence, to apply modelling by MATLAB/SIMULINK, and analysis of the dynamic performance of power electronic converter used with that renewable sources.
The typical house/small carconsume energy 3kW. The existing utility grid supply is single-phase AC power network via a transformer mounted on a post which lowers the voltage 11kV to 240 V.The initial input irradiance to the PV array model is 250 W/m2 and the operating temperature is 25 deg. C. The string of PV array to be selected for 3000W.
Part 1
- Prepare a brief critical evaluation report- of solar PV panel system over current energy sources and other renewable technologies used in energy efficiency improvement for meeting short term and long-term demand by referring to any legitimate sources data and showing charts, alsoconsidering their global impact on environment and demand, cost, benefits, effectiveness, and drawbacks of the given distribution system.
- Determinethe factors that impact on the energy use and efficiency in a building, discussmeasures taken to improve efficiency, technologies and Evaluate selection of technologies that could be used to improve energy efficiency in a Bahrain home or technologies chosen in an electric vehicle namely Tesla Model 3to promote sustainability.
- Refer to scenario, Model the electrical energy consumption of the utility grid distribution system comparing with a PV system using Matlab/Simulink or equivalent software. Analyse the dynamic performance of dc-dc converter usedwith PV system at various irradiance level and calculate energy, cost savings of PV system, considering development and installation cost against utility grid.
Guidance/notes to trainees
• Either para phrased or bulleted report in formal style as mentioned in instructions is acceptable.
• Refer to the government websites EWA/SEU given in sources of information for
• policies also IEA/IRENA websites for latest global statistics.
• Use pictures/diagrams/Pi charts where needed.
• Refer the EWA website or any other website listed under sources of information
• For task to apply modelling, produce print outs using Mat lab/Simulink or any other software.
• Simulate and find PV voltage, power extracted from PV array and other outputs at steady statet=0.25 secusing MATLAB or any convenient simulation aid.The string of PV array to be selected for 3000W.The initial input irradiance to the PV array model to be considered as 250 W/m2 and the operating temperature is 25 deg. C is other data's may be chosen as required for simulation.
• State your references (books, websites, others. etc), also provide captions of the pictures provided.
Evidence for this task:
• A report written in a formal style, indicating tasks and sections.
• Provide print outs of simulation results and validation of data.
